The laboratory needed specialized BSL-3 emergency response training within an accelerated timeframe because available grant funding had to be utilized during a specific funding period. In addition to meeting the compressed schedule, the training needed to address real-world emergency scenarios relevant to the laboratory’s operations and strengthen coordination between laboratory personnel and local emergency responders.

The Solution

World BioHazTec rapidly mobilized its team to design and deliver a customized 1.5-day BSL-3 Emergency Response Training and Drill program. The training incorporated the emergency management cycle and provided participants with practical strategies for responding to incidents involving biological safety cabinets, centrifuges, spills outside primary containment, personnel injuries, and emergency extractions. On the second day, local fire department first responders joined the program for hands-on exercises, a facility tour, and collaborative after-action reviews, creating a valuable opportunity to strengthen coordination and communication before a real-world event occurs.

The Result

The laboratory successfully completed the training within the required funding window while providing staff with realistic, hands-on emergency response experience. Participants strengthened their ability to evaluate incidents, implement response procedures, and work effectively with external emergency responders. The collaboration between laboratory personnel and local first responders enhanced overall preparedness and reinforced a culture of continuous improvement through drills, after-action discussions, and ongoing readiness activities.
