The Challenge

The laboratory sought to strengthen its biosafety program and enhance the competency of personnel working in and around BSL-3 laboratory operations. Leadership wanted an independent review of existing biosafety practices, documentation, and training programs to identify opportunities for continuous improvement while ensuring staff had the knowledge and practical skills needed to work safely and effectively.

The Solution

World BioHazTec partnered with the laboratory to provide a comprehensive biosafety improvement initiative that included a gap analysis, instructional design, customized BSL-3 Biosafety Principles training, and Train-the-Trainer sessions to enable long-term sustainability of the program. The training curriculum was tailored to the laboratory’s operational needs and combined classroom instruction with practical, hands-on learning experiences. Participants completed exercises focused on personal protective equipment (PPE) donning and doffing, as well as an emergency personnel extrication drill designed to reinforce real-world biosafety practices and emergency response procedures. The program also incorporated pre-course assessments to identify knowledge gaps and ensure training content addressed areas of greatest need.

The Result

The assessment process identified five key biosafety knowledge gaps among participants. Prior to training, average assessment scores were 35.0% for Session 1 and 31.8% for Session 2. Following completion of the program, participant scores increased to 94.4% and 91.8%, representing knowledge gains of 165% and 189%, respectively.

Beyond measurable learning outcomes, the project provided the laboratory with a roadmap for strengthening biosafety practices and internal training capabilities. By combining gap analysis, customized instruction, hands-on exercises, and Train-the-Trainer support, World BioHazTec helped build a sustainable framework for ongoing workforce development and reinforced the laboratory’s commitment to operational excellence, biosafety, and public health preparedness.
