The Challenge
AVA proposed construction of a new BSL-3/ABSL-3 facility to conduct virological and bacteriological research, including research using animals. The project included complicated additions and alterations, including adding a specialized waste management system.
Facility features of particular note for design review and monitoring throughout the project included a containment corridor (with pass-through autoclave), Virology BSL-3 (with dedicated ante room, pass-through autoclave, pass-through hatches, two class IIA2 and one class III BSC), Bacteriology BSL-3 (with dedicated ante room and one class IIA2 BSC), chicken isolator laboratory (ABSL-3) with flexi-ducted chicken isolators, waste water treatment for secondary decontamination of ABSL-3 effluent, and chemical carcass digester room (and its connected passageway from the containment corridor). Additionally, each laboratory had its own dedicated ventilation system with an air handler unit and two exhaust fans.
The Solution
As the Ministry of Health Approved Facility Certifier, World BioHazTec takes a proactive role in ensuring the compliance and safety of newly designed facilities subject to the Biological Agents and Toxins Act (BATA). Before the commencement of additions and alterations work, World BioHazTec conducted a thorough assessment to determine if the facility was Certifiable under the BATA. World BioHazTec findings were then communicated to the AVA through a comprehensive inspection report.
World BioHazTec’s commitment goes beyond mere compliance. World BioHazTec actively engage with the client, alerting them to potential issues and offering practical and cost-effective suggestions for improvement. This collaborative approach ensures that the facility not only meets regulatory requirements but is optimized for safety, efficiency, and excellence.
The Result
The successful passage of required inspections and the subsequent approval to resume laboratory operations is a testament to the efforts and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the laboratory and World BioHazTec. The ongoing and uninterrupted operation of the laboratory is a reflection of the collaborative dedication to safety, compliance, and the pursuit of scientific endeavors.
