Confidential Client, Virginia, Security and Vulnerability Assessment

Security and Site Vulnerability

Our client is a biological resource center that provides scientists with the biomaterials and resources they need to conduct critical life science research. Their facility is situated on a campus of approximately 22 acres and contains administrative offices, Biosafety Level (BSL)-1 laboratories, BSL-2 laboratories, a BSL-2/BSL-3 laboratory; to BSL-3 laboratory; and outbuildings used primarily for storage and building management systems.

The Challenge

The client required a security site assessment for their campus in Virginia. Due to the complexity of the campus and having laboratories ranging from BSL-1 to BSL-3, the client required a team of security consultants, engineers, and biosafety professionals to cover a wide range of expertise needed to give a complete analysis of the client’s security posture.

The Solution

World BioHazTec formed a team of consultants to cover the wide range of expertise needed to give a complete analysis of the client’s security. Based upon documentation provided and a scope meeting, we presented our approach and work steps for a site security assessment. Our approach was to measure effectiveness of the security program using guidance documents, regulations, and best practices as standards of care. We conducted interviews, reviewed documents, and performed a site inspection as a basis for a report with recommendations to determine if the client’s security was optimal and conformed to industry best practices including those described in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), 6th Edition.

The Result

World BioHazTec performed a site visit to assess the security environment. The evaluation included:

  • Access control procedures
  • Access Control Monitoring System (ACMS)
  • CCTV
  • Intrusion Detection System (IDS)
  • Intercoms
  • Security Guards
  • Parking
  • Deliveries
  • Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

World BioHazTec delivered a Report of Findings that provided recommendations and best practices that would allow the client to evaluate and consider applying to their campus and high containment security programs. Our recommendations covered six distinct but overlapping categories: people, policy, processes, technology, training, and terrain. The report cited conditions and offered recommendations. We presented observations and identified issues in the report with recommendations to guide the client to achieve a more secure, safe, and healthy work environment.
