Direccion de Redes de Laboratorio, Instituto Nacional de Salud Bogotá,Colombia

Biosafety Policies and Procedures Gap Analysis Training

The Dirección de Redes de Laboratorio at the Instituto Nacional de Salud (INS) is a vital division within Colombia’s national health system, dedicated to strengthening and coordinating laboratory networks across the country. It plays a central role in ensuring the quality, safety, and effectiveness of diagnostic and research laboratories, particularly in the fields of public health, disease surveillance, and outbreak response. Through its efforts, it contributes significantly to improving laboratory capabilities, fostering collaboration, and advancing public health initiatives throughout Colombia.

The Challenge

The Dirección de Redes de Laboratorio sought expert support from World BioHazTec to review and enhance their existing biosafety procedures for BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories. They also needed to identify any gaps in their current safety protocols and provide advanced training for laboratory personnel. This initiative aimed to strengthen the biosafety protocols of laboratory professionals across Colombia, ensuring both safety and compliance in high-containment environments.

The Solution

World BioHazTec conducted a detailed gap analysis of existing biosafety protocols, identifying areas for improvement. This was followed by the design and delivery of an intensive 3-day training course titled “Biosecurity and Biosafety in Controlled Environment Facilities”. The course, tailored for 83 laboratory professionals, offered a hands-on, interactive, and participatory approach that allowed participants to engage actively with the content.

The training sessions were structured to address the specific needs and challenges faced by laboratory personnel working in high-containment environments. The interactive activities, discussions, and real-life scenarios facilitated a deeper understanding of the biosafety practices needed to manage potential risks and ensure a safe working environment.

The Result

The outcome of this training program was highly successful, with all participants leaving with a stronger understanding of biosafety and a shared commitment to improving their lab practices. This interactive approach not only enhanced their practical knowledge but also built a network of professionals who could support each other in improving biosafety measures across the country. Participants reported feeling more confident in implementing biosafety measures and addressing potential risks in their laboratories, ultimately contributing to safer and more effective research environments.

World BioHazTec’s involvement in this project helped the Dirección de Redes de Laboratorio strengthen its biosafety framework, setting a new standard for laboratory safety and providing ongoing support for the professional development of Colombia’s public health laboratory workforce.
