The Challenge
As concerns about potential bio-threats loomed, the NIH Clinical Center, the world’s largest clinical research hospital, undertook the construction of the SCSU. A unique demand surfaced – the need for a specialized room capable of catering to intensive care level patients exposed to highly infectious diseases.
The Solution
Enter World BioHazTec, the expert containment consultant serving a significant role of this transformative project. Our team of engineers and biosafety professionals meticulously scrutinized the detailed design drawings of the SCSU. Guiding the implementation of multiple redundant systems, we ensured a comprehensive approach, managing and disinfecting materials and waste leaving the unit. Our expertise extended to evaluating air handling systems, card key access, staff pathways, including a pre-exit shower, and waste management protocols.
The Result
Construction completion marked the initiation of rigorous testing by World BioHazTec, validating the patient isolation unit and affirming the building systems’ compliance with containment standards. Our engineers observed and collected independent pressure differential data, repeating HVAC/exhaust system failure scenarios in subsequent years to guarantee the sustained success of the SCSU design. During the most extensive Ebola epidemic in history, the patient isolation unit played a crucial role by accommodating individuals potentially infected with the virus.
