The Challenge
The Washington State Department of Health identified the need to modernize and enhance its high-containment laboratory capabilities to support future public health needs. Before upgrades could begin, the department needed an independent assessment of the facility’s existing conditions, identification of gaps affecting operational readiness and containment performance, and a roadmap for prioritizing improvements. The project required a partner capable of providing both strategic guidance and technical expertise throughout the planning, implementation, and commissioning phases.
The Solution
World BioHazTec was initially engaged to perform a comprehensive gap analysis of the laboratory and provide recommendations to improve containment, safety, and operational performance. Working closely with project stakeholders, the team helped prioritize critical infrastructure and operational upgrades, develop implementation strategies, and provide ongoing consultation throughout the modernization effort.
As the project progressed, World BioHazTec continued to support implementation activities by providing biocontainment expertise and technical guidance to help ensure upgrades aligned with the laboratory’s operational objectives. Upon completion of the improvements, World BioHazTec developed commissioning plans, conducted functional performance testing, and performed comprehensive commissioning activities to verify that critical laboratory systems operated as intended and supported safe facility operation.
The Result
The project transformed a gap assessment into a successful laboratory modernization effort, with World BioHazTec supporting the facility from initial evaluation through final commissioning. By helping identify deficiencies, prioritize improvements, guide implementation, and verify system performance, World BioHazTec provided continuity throughout the project’s lifecycle. The result was a commissioned high-containment laboratory better positioned to support the Washington State Department of Health’s mission of protecting public health and responding to emerging biological threats.
