The Challenge
In 2021, it was determined that the technology used to control the laboratory’s directional airflow was obsolete. The critical objective of the project was to navigate regulatory compliance and minimize the laboratory’s down-time.
The Solution
Though the HVAC/exhaust system passed third-party certification, upgrading the BSL-3/ABSL-3 laboratory controls would modernize the system to current technology providing faster response and adding to the longevity of the laboratory system.
It was imperative to make upgrades to reduce risk in a manner so as not to impact research and comply with the provisions of the utilization requirements of the grant. Our proposed solution kept the facility fully operational with no effect on research projects, minimal regulatory involvement, and extended service life of the facility.
The Result
In a concerted effort involving controls manufacturers, installers, University staff, and World BioHazTec, the task was successfully executed during the annual shutdown of the laboratory. Serving as the University of Louisville’s owner’s advocate and biocontainment subject matter expert, we ensured seamless collaboration among all contractors to meet the CDC’s regulatory requirements. Following the completion of the project, we meticulously commissioned and certified the laboratory, ensuring regulatory compliance. The CPM continues to operate effectively. World BioHazTec remains committed to the ongoing annual certification of the containment laboratories at the University of Louisville.
